Cameroon delegation was officially born in May 1999 at the Provincial Council in Bujumbura. However,  our presence, as Daughters of Mary and Joseph in Cameroon, goes back to 1980 when Sisters Monique and Louis Marie settled in the extreme northern part of the country, in Mayo-Ouldeme parish in the Diocese of Maroua-Mokola. Their pastoral presence involved catechises among the people who were thirsting for God.

Africa Provincial

In 1998 the Africa provincial house was opened in Yaoundé, Cameroon's capital city. Marie-Jose Baranyanka was the provincial and Monique Boils was her assitant provincial co-ordinator.

In 2002, the Novitiate moved from Uganda to Yaoundé in Cameroon. Currently there are Four Novices, Ngabirano Jovias, Kyoshabire Monica, Mutesi Mary Nevis living with Sr. Leonidas Komugisha who is their Novice Mistress and Alice Kyosiimire ministering in Ghana at the moment.Novitiate Community

 

 

 

The second community is situated in the extreme-northern province in the Diocese of Maroua-Mokolo.  It is in an area that is 12% christian (4.2% catholic), 23 or 24% Muslim and the vast majority nearly 65% are Traditional believers. The statistics say that our Diocese has the highest illiteracy rate in the country with 9 out of 10 women unable to read and 4 out of 10 children attend school.

Today we are in Mémé parish and the light of christianity continues to shine. We areSr.Martina with a group of women daily challenged and encouraged by these words from Scripture: "You are the light of the world. May your light shine before all that they may see the good that you do and give glory to God."

"... as Daughters of Mary and Joseph we share with Christ in his mission of incarnating the merciful love of God in the World. It is in the local church, in whose life we are immersed, that we incarnate this mission" (Constitution art. 34)


Today we live this mission responding to the needs of the people in a variety of ways. Through catechesis, youth apostolate, adult literacy, education of the whole person,  especially for women and young girls, we hope to give the people opportunities to deepen their human development and to acquire basic living skills, so that they can Sr. Henriette knitting with the Girlsbecome self-reliant and confident. We also promote and give basic health care to those living with HIV/AIDS, work at a public dispensary, providing outreach services in villages, giving health education talks,immunization, consultation, treatment for those who cannot afford to come to the health centre.
